“We don’t have much time left”

Mr. Martynov, you are deputy editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, one of the last independent, free newspapers in Russia. How do you deal with censorship and government bullying?
The Russian press is being completely destroyed by the authorities. There are hardly any journalists in Russia who can actually do their job – and only a few media companies that can report despite the war censorship. We at Novaya Gazeta feel that we are running out of time to report freely. Russia feels like a blinded society at the moment. The vast majority of Russians simply have no information about what is happening in Ukraine. They don’t even know what’s happening in their own country. I believe that in recent history there has never been a situation like this in a European country.
