Dusseldorf The family business Conrad Electronic has turned its business model completely inside out. Until recently it was still one of the largest electronics mail-order companies for private customers in Germany, but now it makes 70 percent of its sales with deliveries to corporate customers.

The reason for this is large online retailers like Amazon, who have “run over” the market, says Conrad boss Ralf Bühler in an interview with the Handelsblatt. Conrad could not counter that. “The mass business is reduced to fewer and fewer products, to smartphones or drones, which hardly bring any margin,” says Bühler.

Today, Conrad Electronic supplies several thousand companies and has been able to keep sales almost constant at 1.1 billion euros – even though the retailer has closed almost all stationary shops. Because he has found a new lucrative niche in the middle class.
