“The will of the people of Turkey, who see the dismantling of this ship as an unacceptable toxic threat, and the protests of local groups in Aliağa have been ignored since the first day. If we can’t create the public pressure that occurred 14 years ago, unfortunately, this time the result will be that Turkey violates the environment and human rights. It will go down in history as a big mistake.
The adventure of the poisoned ship, which started with the tender process a few years ago, brought along many question marks. International conventions that will establish environmental justice, protect environmental safety and public health have been interpreted by official authorities to serve their own objectives, and especially public participation and access to information obligations have been ignored.
The fact that we were able to access information and documents about Sao Paulo through the Brazilian authorities was a regrettable experience as we saw that transparency, public participation and access to information rights in Turkey remained on paper. At the end of the day, the authorities in Brazil even ignored the decision of their own courts and allowed the aircraft carrier to be removed from Brazilian territorial waters by Sök Denizcilik, as if the hull of the fire had smuggled goods.
