Warning About Asbestos Ship From Greenpeace To Turkey

Greenpeace Akdeniz has shared a new warning about the ship with asbestos, which has 20 days left to arrive in Turkey. The organization shared that if this is not prevented, it could go down in history as a big mistake.

We have shared all the details about the asbestos ship with you before:

In the past weeks, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the Brazilian navy Nae Sao Paulo His approval of the dismemberment of the warship in Izmir created a great agenda. The reason why this approval is on the agenda is that the alleged 900 tons of asbestos was. Minister Murat Kurum, the asbestos in the ship 9 tons According to experts, even this amount of asbestos carries a great risk for our future.

The approval given for the dismantling of the ship in Aliağa was not withdrawn after the reactions and the ship’s arrival in Turkey was announced today. by Greenpeace A warning came. Environmentalist non-governmental organization Greenpeace reminded that there is 20 days left for the ship to reach Turkey and shared that the result will go down in history as a big mistake violating Turkey’s environment and human rights.

Greenpeace’s statement:

“The will of the people of Turkey, who see the dismantling of this ship as an unacceptable toxic threat, and the protests of local groups in Aliağa have been ignored since the first day. If we can’t create the public pressure that occurred 14 years ago, unfortunately, this time the result will be that Turkey violates the environment and human rights. It will go down in history as a big mistake.

The adventure of the poisoned ship, which started with the tender process a few years ago, brought along many question marks. International conventions that will establish environmental justice, protect environmental safety and public health have been interpreted by official authorities to serve their own objectives, and especially public participation and access to information obligations have been ignored.

The fact that we were able to access information and documents about Sao Paulo through the Brazilian authorities was a regrettable experience as we saw that transparency, public participation and access to information rights in Turkey remained on paper. At the end of the day, the authorities in Brazil even ignored the decision of their own courts and allowed the aircraft carrier to be removed from Brazilian territorial waters by Sök Denizcilik, as if the hull of the fire had smuggled goods. What we are witnessing today is a dangerous case of a potential illegal import of waste.

We reiterate our call for the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change to remove the partial permit and say full back to Sao Paulo so that it is not complicit in this crime.”

Greenpeace stated that the ship, which set out against the decision of the Federal District Court of Brazil, was subject to the Basel Convention on Transboundary Hazardous Waste Control and their disposal. Contrary to the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Mediterranean Coastal Zone shared that it was exported.

Greenpeace had previously managed to prevent a disaster from happening in a different country:

Greenpeace has been drawing attention to the risks posed by shipbreaking to the environment and human health since 1998. It reminded me of a similar event. Between 2004 and 2006, the organization was the ship’s twin of Clemenceau, who is now known as the twin of the ship that set out to come to our country. He was instrumental in preventing him from being sent first to Turkey and then to India. The ship was eventually taken back by France. It was stated that Clemenceau also contains tons of asbestos, TBT, PCBs and radioactive materials, like Nae Sao Paulo, which is coming to Turkey.

Greenpeace also launched a petition to prevent the ship, which set off from Brazil, from reaching Turkey. 38 thousand 641 people have signed the petition so far.
