War opponents between protest and fear

Berlin They shouted “No to war!” and held up placards expressing solidarity with Ukraine. In numerous Russian cities, people demonstrated against Russia’s attack on its neighboring country on Thursday. According to civil rights groups, there were protests in a good 40 cities, and around 1,000 people gathered on the central Pushkin Square in Moscow.

So far, more than 1,700 people have been arrested in connection with such rallies, according to civil rights organizations. According to eyewitnesses, uniformed security forces brutally attacked the demonstrators, sometimes beating them for no apparent reason.

The demonstrations are officially banned, and participants face severe penalties. The Tagesspiegel spoke to Russians who are opposed to Putin’s war in Ukraine. To protect their identity, only their first names are given.
