Beirut Development Minister Svenja Schulze walks past crushed containers, old car tires and abandoned sacks. Since a huge explosion devastated the port of Beirut in August 2020, little here is the same as it used to be. Ruins of destroyed grain silos tower in front of Schulze.

They are not only a reminder of the catastrophe almost two years ago, but are also a symbol of Lebanon’s biggest problem at the moment. The country lacks wheat to feed the population.

Schulze is visiting here to devote himself to a picture of what is probably the most important challenge of her term of office: the food crisis that is looming worldwide.
