Berlin According to Yasmin Fahimi, the new chair of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), trade unions and employers alone will not be able to compensate for the current high rates of inflation through collective bargaining. “We need additional political flanking measures,” said Fahimi in an interview with the Handelsblatt. For example, a more targeted third relief package and improvements in the long-distance commuter allowance are needed.
The DGB boss was open to the fact that politicians should at least temporarily exempt the services specified in collective bargaining agreements in whole or in part from tax. “But we will certainly not let ourselves be dictated what kind of degrees we do,” emphasized Fahimi. “If we were to practice wage restraint now, which would be completely the wrong way, the price shock would hit the workforce in full over the next few years.”
