Dusseldorf Volkswagen is reorganizing its production capacities in China. By bundling production, the carmaker wants to create space for the production of electric cars, as a company spokesman explained to the Handelsblatt on Tuesday. Accordingly, both the component and vehicle production of VW in China should be set up differently.

Among other things, the assembly of models with combustion engines is to be relocated from the Anting plant near Shanghai to other locations. Volkswagen was responding to reports on social media portals in China that speculated about the factory closing. The Reuters news agency initially reported on the capacity shift.

Anting is the headquarters of SAIC Volkswagen’s main plant in China. The factory, which VW operates together with its joint venture partner SAIC, currently consists of four parts of the plant, which will be combined into three.
