Von der Leyen’s five-point plan for the gas crisis

Brussels The EU Commission wants to combat the energy crisis with a five-point plan, which also includes a special levy for oil and gas companies. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attempt to stir up fears of supply in Europe by reducing gas exports “is a test case for our unity and solidarity,” said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to the Handelsblatt and some other European media. “Putin is manipulating our energy markets and using gas supplies as a weapon.”

The Commission is proposing concrete measures to stem and cushion the rapid rise in energy prices, which is causing widespread unrest among Europeans. The proposals are to be discussed with the member states for the first time on Wednesday. The legal texts are then to be presented next week.
