Washington A US House of Representatives committee has opened an investigation into investments by four US venture capital firms in Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor companies.

The select committee on Wednesday asked Qualcomm Ventures, the investment arm of chipmaker Qalcomm and GGV Capital, GSR Ventures and Walden International to disclose information about their China operations by August 1. GGV, Walden, GSR and Qualcomm did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The committee’s letters to the companies said the investments directly contributed to China’s human rights abuses, particularly the repression of the Uyghur Muslim minority, military modernization and the Chinese Communist Party’s drive to oust US technological leadership. The government in Beijing has always denied US allegations of human rights violations against Uyghurs.
