US pushes ahead with plan to boycott Russian oil

Zurich, Berlin, Brussels, Paris Shops are closing, companies are going bankrupt, the ruble is declining: Western sanctions are hitting the Russian economy hard, but so far they have not been able to dissuade the regime in Moscow from the campaign against Ukraine. The war has now lasted almost two weeks, and with each new night of bombing, the pressure grows to cut even the last economic ties.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stressed on Sunday that the US and its western allies are currently discussing ending oil imports from Russia. “It’s a very active discussion,” said Blinken — albeit a very complicated one.

Russia is the third largest oil producer in the world and the second largest exporter. Most recently, the country exported an average of between 4.5 and 5 million barrels of crude oil per day. This corresponds to around five percent of global oil consumption.
