Unprecedented events are taking place in US politics. Republican members of the House of Representatives held a vote to determine the candidate for Speaker of the House. However, before the vote, members took an unusual step and their phones were forcibly confiscated.
Phones of US politicians were seized to prevent leaks
At the meeting held behind closed doors by the members of the Republican Party, the Speaker of the House candidate was determined. An interesting event took place in the vote in which Majority Leader Steve Scalise was elected as president.
In order to protect the confidentiality of the vote counting, representatives handed over their phones to the officials before entering the meeting. The phones were placed in separate envelopes with numbers on them, and members were given a note card. This was a decision that had never been made in a vote before.
According to Republican Party member Marjorie Taylor Greene, this measure was taken to prevent tweeting during the vote. It was also aimed at preventing leaks from the party’s special session. Photos released after the vote showed the phones were stored in boxes and kept on a shelf outside the meeting room.
As a result of the voting, Steve Scalise defeated Jim Jordan, who is known for supporting Trump, but his presidency has not been finalized yet. While the full parliament will start voting today, Jordan supporters stated that they may extend the period.
