Beijing According to a media report, China caused a sensation with the test of a hypersonic missile suitable for nuclear weapons. China is apparently further ahead with this technology than the US had assumed, reports the Financial Times, citing five unspecified insiders.
The test took place in August. The missile missed its target by only about two dozen miles. The Chinese Defense Ministry initially did not respond to a request for comment on Saturday’s newspaper report on Sunday.
The US and Russia are also developing hypersonic military missiles. Last month, North Korea announced that it had tested a newly developed hypersonic missile.
This type of weapon is difficult to intercept by defense systems because it can fly relatively low. However, the speed can be five times the speed of sound, i.e. about 6200 kilometers per hour.
