Frankfurt, Hamburg The telecom and Internet holding company United Internet is looking for buyers for its business with the e-mail portals GMX and Web.de. The Handelsblatt learned this from financial and industry circles. Potential buyers can bid for both a minority and majority stake in the division, according to several people familiar with the matter.

In the case of a deal, the portals, which are largely financed through advertising, could be valued at around 1.5 billion euros. GMX and Web.de, founded in the mid-1990s, are among the German pioneers of internet business.

United Internet initially left a query from the Handelsblatt unanswered.

The entrepreneur Ralph Dommermuth, founder and CEO of United Internet, has big plans. With his telecom provider 1&1, he is currently building a new, ultra-fast 5G mobile network – the fourth in Germany. With this step, Dommermuth wants to make himself independent of Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica (O2), whose infrastructure he has been renting so far.
