Berlin The energy group Uniper made a net loss of around three billion euros in the first quarter. The reason for this was losses in the gas storage business and write-downs of around two billion euros, in particular in connection with the initially failed gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 and the Russian subsidiary Unipro, the group announced on Tuesday evening. However, the group is sticking to its annual forecasts for adjusted EBIT of EUR 1.0 to 1.3 billion and adjusted net income of EUR 800 million to EUR 1.1 billion. Uniper will present the full report on May 3.

“The main reason for the negative result in the first quarter is a shift in earnings to later quarters of 2022, which comes from our gas business,” said CFO Tiina Tuomela. Uniper deliberately made this shift in earnings in order to take advantage of market opportunities and create additional value. “At the same time, we are strengthening the security of supply in Germany because we have withdrawn less gas from our storage facilities.” It is not a question of a loss of earnings, but of a shift in earnings.

According to the preliminary figures, the Düsseldorf subsidiary of the Finnish energy group Fortum achieved an adjusted EBIT of minus 830 million euros from January to the end of March. In the same period of the previous year, Uniper had still made a profit of 731 million euros.
