Union still stable in election poll ahead of SPD and Greens

Berlin, Leipzig The Left Party would currently miss entering parliament in a federal election. In the Sunday trend, which the opinion research institute INSA collects for “Bild am Sonntag”, the left comes to four percent this week, a drop of one percentage point compared to the previous week.

The strongest force remains the Union with an unchanged 28 percent. The Social Democrats remain at 20 percent, the FDP at seven percent. The Greens can gain a point and come to 18 percent this week. The AfD remains at 15 percent. The other parties could unite eight percent of the votes.

Top politicians from the left have agreed on political priorities for the next few months in order to regain their footing after electoral flops and internal disputes. At a crisis meeting in Leipzig, according to information from party circles, they approved a joint statement on Saturday. This lists social security, well-paid work, strict climate protection and peace as key areas of content.

The Left is a “historic achievement”, but it is in danger, according to the “Leipzig Declaration” by party and faction leaders from the federal and state governments. “There is even speculation in public about the formation of an alternative party project. On the other hand, we are ready to fight for our common party, to defend and further develop the historic project of a united, plural socialist party.”

The top officials are thus distancing themselves from the former parliamentary group leader Sahra Wagenknecht. This had criticized the party leadership and floated the idea of ​​founding a party.

Federal chairmen Janine Wissler and Martin Schirdewan invited all the important officials to Leipzig to get their backing. Wagenknecht was not there – she is a simple member of the parliamentary group and has no party office.
