Berlin The security expert Gustav Gressel from the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) assumes that the Russian troops will soon launch a major offensive in eastern Ukraine. He calls on the federal government to speed up arms deliveries.
“Russia will try to force the Ukrainian army in the east into a war of attrition and wear it out until the organized resistance collapses,” Gressel said in an interview with the Handelsblatt. The terrain in the Donbass is better suited for this than the area around Kyiv. “I’m expecting bigger offensives from next week.”
The expert, who worked for a long time in the Austrian Ministry of Defence, stresses that if Ukraine is to win the war, arms deliveries would have to be stepped up. “The German position, the Ukrainians are not trained on Western equipment, so we cannot deliver it, is not tenable,” emphasized Gressel.
