Brussels The war in Ukraine has been raging for three weeks now. There is no end in sight, but in Western capitals the assessment is gaining ground that Russian President Vladimir Putin has already missed his most important war goals.
Putin had planned a triumphal procession, a regime change in Kyiv with little resistance at best, and seems to have made a major mistake: he underestimated his opponent.
“The Ukrainians are doing exceptionally well: they are fending off Putin’s ground troops, cutting off supply routes and refusing air superiority,” analyzes ex-US diplomat Kurt Volker, who was the US special representative for the conflict over Ukraine between 2017 and 2019, in a recent publication Report.
The advance of Putin’s invading army has stalled. Siege battles and attrition battles characterize the Ukraine war – and drain the strength of the Russian military.
