Ukraine reports minor gains and heavy fighting

Recovery of Ukrainian agriculture could take 20 years

A local research center says it could take up to 20 years for Ukraine’s agricultural sector to recover from the devastation caused by the Russian invasion. Sunflower, barley and wheat cultivation is expected to recover by 2040, according to a report by the Kiev School of Economics. For corn, rye, oats and rapeseed, it will probably not be until 2050. “This means that it may take up to 20 years for Ukraine to regain its agricultural strength after the devastation caused by the Russian attack,” the researchers explain. Ukraine is a major global producer and exporter of wheat, corn, sunflower and sunflower oil, but production has fallen drastically since the war began in February 2022. ‘According to the modeling results, some sectors will not return to pre-war levels even after seven years of peace,’ the report says.
