What is the CFE Agreement? What does it mean for Türkiye and Europe?

The CFE Agreement, that is, the European Conventional Forces Treaty, has an importance as it marks the official end of the Cold War in 1990. With the end of the war period, there is actually a balance of power problem in Europe. Border security is actually under threat, especially with the constant power conflicts with neighboring countries and Russia.

In this context, European countries come together and sign the CFE Agreement. Within the scope of this agreement, the number of tanks, artillery, armored vehicles and aircraft that can be deployed in Europe is limited. It also includes regulations regarding the locations of the mentioned military vehicles.

As of today, the agreement consists of 29 countries. By presidential decision, Türkiye announced its withdrawal from the agreement. With this decision, Türkiye will now It will be able to produce 5 conventional weapons and will not share information such as the production quantities of the mentioned weapons. These conventional weapons include battle tanks, informant aircraft, artillery, and attack helicopters.
