What is an earthquake and how does it occur?

Before we move on to what an earthquake is, let’s first take a closer look at the layers of the planet we live in. Earth is made up of inner core, outer core, mantle and crust layers, from the inside out.

The inner core, which is the densest layer, also affects the mantle layer above it with its temperature. While the lower parts of the mantle are liquid, the upper parts are plastic-like due to the pressure. Therefore, the earth’s crust floats above the mantle.

Of course, the earth’s crust is not a single piece. Due to the pressure formed over time, it breaks and breaks into pieces, each of which we call a plate. In line with the movements of the magma, these plates constantly push each other. For example, the Anatolian plate, on which most of Turkey is located, is constantly pushed westward by the African and Arabian plates.

Some plates can also move in the opposite direction by rubbing against each other. These intersections are called fault lines, which we often hear. Earthquakes occur as a result of movements on the fault line. The magnitude of this earthquake varies according to the accumulated energy. The energy of the plates, which cannot repel each other for a long time, also grows over time.

• low risk areas: Karaman, Kırklareli, Nevşehir, Aksaray, Konya, Edirne, Ankara, Niğde, Sinop, Giresun, Rize, Artvin, Trabzon and Adana.
• Medium risk areas: Eskisehir, Antalya, Tekirdag, Edirne, Sinop, Istanbul, Kastamonu, Ordu, Samsun, Giresun, Artvin, Sanliurfa, Mardin, Kilis, Adana and Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Sivas, Gumushane, Bayburt, Kayseri, Yozgat, Corum, Ankara, Konya, Mersin and Nevşehir.
• High risk areas: Izmir, Balikesir, Manisa, Mugla, Aydin, Denizli, Isparta, Usak, Bursa, Bilecik Yalova, Sakarya, Düzce, Kocaeli, Kirsehir, Bolu, Karabuk Hatay, Bartin, Cankiri, Tokat, Amasya, Canakkale, Erzincan, Tunceli, Bingol, Mus, Hakkari, Osmaniye, Kirikkale and Siirt.

Low-risk areas can also be affected by earthquakes that occur in high-risk areas. On the other hand, it is in danger due to the Marmara earthquake that will be on the North Anatolian Fault line. Istanbul’s risky districts as follows;

• High risk counties: Zeytinburnu, Küçükçekmece, Florya, Esenyurt (Esenkent), Ispartakule, Avcılar (Ambarlı), and Haramidere.
