Washington The stuffed deer, stags and antelope are the only lifeless things in the room, everything else is glowing with energy. 500 people crowd into the party room of “Adventure Outdoors”, a gigantic gun and hunting shop on the outskirts of the US metropolis of Atlanta. They want to see Ron DeSantis live, the rising Republican star.

DeSantis is on the move: “Biden has to go!” he shouts, “we will never capitulate to the left-wing mob.” The governor of the US state of Florida is on a book tour, but his trip is a warm-up for the presidential campaign. The 44-year-old wants to officially enter the race for the White House in the spring. If he is nominated by the Republicans, he could become Joe Biden’s challenger in 2024.
