Stuttgart The high-tech company Trumpf achieved record growth at the end of the past fiscal year. According to preliminary calculations, sales rose by 27 percent compared to the previous year to 5.4 billion euros, as Trumpf announced on Thursday. Never before has the laser and mechanical engineering specialist increased its revenues by such a sum in one year.

The main driver of the development is the semiconductor business. After more than ten years of development, the family company supplies so-called EUV lasers for the production machines of the most modern chips worldwide to the manufacturer ASML. The relatively young business field at trump now has a turnover of almost one billion euros.

ASML has a worldwide unique monopoly. All major chip manufacturers such as TSMC, Intel and Samsung depend on the machines from the Netherlands. In addition to Trumpf, a second key Swabian supplier also benefits from the boom: Carl Zeiss supplies the optics for the ASML lithography machines.

Trumpf: Business in China is stagnating, orders are down slightly

Trumpf’s US business also increased by EUR 250 million to around EUR 900 million. The home market grew significantly by 30 percent to 770 million euros. As the strongest Asian market, China stagnated with a slight increase to 600 million euros in sales.

“Despite persistently difficult general conditions, we closed an excellent financial year in the year of our 100th company anniversary,” said Trumpf CEO Nicola Leibinger-Kammüller. “Nevertheless, we have been seeing a drop in orders for a few months due to the slowdown in the global economy.”

Although incoming orders exceeded the five billion euro mark again, at a total of 5.1 billion euros they were around nine percent below the previous year’s high. Overall, Leibinger-Kammüller spoke of a solid start, but caution is advised.

Trumpf employs 17,900 people worldwide, 8,800 of them in Germany and 5,800 at the headquarters in Ditzingen. Last year, employees received a bonus of 2,500 euros.
