Berlin The war in Ukraine is said to be in its final phase, according to Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov. He uses a particularly vivid football comparison: The fight has arrived between the 72nd and 75th minute – however, overtime and penalties, as in a knockout game in football, cannot be ruled out, he told the RBK-Ukrajina news agency.

Budanov considers a reconquest of the entire territory occupied by Russia to be “quite” possible this year. The necessary Ukrainian spring offensive is still in preparation. “I think that enough territory will be recaptured in this operation,” Budanov said. To stay in football jargon, this means: Attack is the best form of defence.

While observers are waiting for the counteroffensive to begin, fighting in Ukraine is currently concentrated on three front sectors.
