This is how a German could get to the moon

The European Space Agency Esa is building the important supply module for NASA’s Orion spacecraft, which is intended to take astronauts to the moon.

Bremen Alexander Gerst is standing in front of the “European Service Module” (ESM) in a safety hat, overall and overshoes. The huge supply module for astronauts like him is the heart of the spaceship Orion. It is being built in an Airbus clean room in Bremen, where the air has to be as clean as possible. That’s why Gerst wears the safety clothing.

As part of the international space project Artemis, the ESM could put the first people on the moon in 50 years as early as 2025. And a few years later maybe Gerst or another German. “I would absolutely love to go to the moon,” says the astronaut. “But there are a lot of us, and that’s not that important either.”
