Dusseldorf, Berlin The energy-intensive German industry is urgently warning of a possible supply stop for Russian natural gas. Even rationing could lead to production losses, which would have consequences for the entire processing industry in Germany, say managers from the chemical industry, for example. Where a lot of gas is used as an energy source and raw material, companies are threatened with closure if there are restrictions.

On Wednesday, Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) announced the “early warning level” of the so-called gas emergency plan and thus warned the economy of a significant deterioration in the gas supply. These industries would be hit hardest by a supply disruption or rationing:

1. Chemical industry: “Heart of the German economy”

For Christian Kullmann, the chemical industry is the “heart of the German economy”. There is a warning in this sentence by the Evonik boss and president of the VCI chemical association on Wednesday: if it stops beating, it will have serious consequences for all sectors. And that is a realistic scenario in the event of a gas supply failure in the industry.
