Dusseldorf
German employers are increasingly open to career changers: in 2022, more than 600,000 companies placed around 25 million job advertisements in Germany – more than eleven million vacancies had to be filled. Every tenth job was expressly suitable for applicants from outside the field or industry.

The corresponding job advertisements contained phrases such as “lateral entrants are welcome” or “lateral entrants welcome”. This means that the number of jobs specifically for people switching has quadrupled compared to 2020. This is shown by an exclusive evaluation by the Employer Branding Advice Index for the Handelsblatt. Around 270 print media, more than 400 online job exchanges and 650,000 company websites as well as the job portal of the Federal Employment Agency were analyzed for the evaluation.

Index boss Jürgen Grenz cites the shortage of skilled workers, from which all sectors are currently suffering, as the reason for the much more flexible search for personnel: “The shortage of personnel in trade and industry is considerable,” says the expert. And the trend is rising: career changers with technical and manual know-how as well as sales talent have particularly good job opportunities.
