Berlin With 700 euros you can buy a new bike or top up your holiday budget. 700 euros is also roughly the amount that a family can save on waste water if they move from Potsdam to Worms.

This is shown by an evaluation of the sewage charges in 100 cities, which the German Economic Institute (IW) prepared on behalf of the Haus und Grund owners’ association.

Wastewater is always produced in the same way in households in Germany. But according to the IW study, water for washing, bathing or flushing the toilet costs twice or even three times more in some regions of Germany than in others.

The prices that consumers have to pay for the disposal of their waste water vary by several hundred euros per year, depending on where they live. For example, a four-person household in Ludwigsburg or Worms pays less than 300 euros a year on average, while in Mönchengladbach or Potsdam it is more than 900 euros.
