Rome, Berlin When the obligatory family photo is in the box, the heads of state and government in front, the national flags in the back, doctors and paramedics suddenly flock to the stage. They stand between the applauding G20 leaders, the powerful united with the helpers of the corona crisis. It is an important sign that the Italians have set with it. But it also shows that the pandemic is at the center of the Roman summit. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi only mentioned the global climate crisis once in his opening speech.

Environmentalists had hoped for a tailwind from the meeting of the leading industrialized and emerging countries, especially when it came to the climate. After all, the G20 countries are responsible for around 75 percent of global emissions. But there is no clear signal. The starting point for the World Climate Conference, which began on Sunday in Glasgow: missed.
