The Turkish Grand National Assembly Digital Media Commission is preparing to impose various sanctions on TikTok due to immoral content published on the platform. Commission Chairman Hüseyin Yayman stated that TikTok representatives will be invited to the Turkish Grand National Assembly and disturbing content on the platform will be addressed.
The Turkish Grand National Assembly is considering imposing a ban on TikTok due to immoral content.
Yayman said that some of TikTok’s live broadcasts display immoral attitudes under the pretext of fundraising, and added that such behavior could become a matter of national security. Stating that TikTok does not fulfill its promises, Yayman stated that some content is provocative and harmful.
He stated that, especially in the pre-election period, provocative posts were made on social media platforms on topics such as stray animals, refugees and the economy. Yayman stated that such content can create unrest in society and that social media platforms’ own self-control mechanisms are insufficient.
The Digital Media Commission plans to impose various sanctions after meetings with TikTok representatives. Band throttling, advertising and trade baneven the platform license revocation Penalties up to 100% are under evaluation. The Commission stated that such sanctions are in line with the demands of the public and that more work will be done on this issue in the coming days.
This development shows that more attention is needed regarding content control and social impacts of social media platforms. This step of the Turkish Grand National Assembly on TikTok may raise the issue of whether similar regulations and control mechanisms will be introduced to other social media platforms. For social media users, more debate and regulation can be expected on how to govern such platforms from an ethical and security perspective.
