The traffic light got bogged down

The gas levy by Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) finally becomes a non-starter. The challenges in the middle of the energy crisis are complex, and the government under Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is dealing with many things professionally. But the coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP has meanwhile got completely lost in their self-built gas allocation maze. The whole thing now borders on the surreal.

First, the Economics Minister presents a compulsory levy for all gas customers, which is technically a total botch. Then, after the nationalization of Uniper, he had doubts about the financial constitution.

Habeck is still sticking to the levy and yells at the opposition in the Bundestag that they can only shout “The gas levy must go”. Secretly, however, he hopes that Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) will do just that for him elegantly.

Unfortunately, Lindner is not plagued by any financial constitutional doubts, and so he lets the millstone hang around Habeck’s neck. However, two weeks before the state elections in Lower Saxony, the Minister of Finance has concerns about the economic sense of the project. The confusion has now reached its peak.
