Vienna The Ukrainian defenders in Bakhmut are struggling around the clock against Russian assaults and constant bombardment. “Every hour is hell,” was how a commander of the National Guard summarized the situation on Saturday. Although the Russians have advanced somewhat in some sections to the north and east of the city, the Ukrainians seem to have managed to stabilize the front to some extent.

According to Russian military analysts from Rybar, west of Bakhmut, they even launched minor counterattacks.

Their goal is to keep the routes to the west, which were almost completely interrupted on Friday, open for supplies and evacuations. The Ukrainians managed to do this thanks to reinforcements rushed to the region, even though the roads are under Russian fire. According to the Institute for the Study of War, the acute danger of encirclement has been averted for the moment.
