Rarely have risen and fall been so close together as in 2022. We have a year behind us that actually began with confidence. The world was just learning to live with the corona virus, and governments across Europe were in the process of moving towards an end to the restrictions.

There was talk of a new beginning, a phase of growth, technological breakthroughs, even a repeat of the “Golden Twenties”. Then, on February 24, Russian troops marched into Ukraine, and a year of new beginnings turned into a year of historic turning point.

The world was suddenly confronted with questions that no one would have dared to ask a few weeks earlier. At the Handelsblatt, for example, we had to deal overnight with the problem of how to evacuate reporters from a war zone.
