The federal government is taking over more and more of the state spending. As a result, its new borrowing is expected to rise to 139 billion euros this year, while the federal states have already achieved a plus of 20.5 billion euros in the first half of this year.

Berlin It is rare that Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) and Bremen’s state father Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) agree. But at the weekend it was time. Both vented their anger at the federal government in similar terms.

The occasion was the third relief package that the federal government has just passed. This should relieve citizens and companies by 65 billion euros, 19 billion euros of which will be borne by the federal states – who, however, want nothing to do with it. “In its current form, the relief package cannot be approved,” threatens Söder. “The federal government needs to improve significantly,” says Bovenschulte.

The conflict is about more than the usual bickering over a few billion. A lot of frustration has built up between the federal government and the federal states over the past few years on financial issues, which is now being released.
