Berlin The federal government fears trouble from Brussels. According to information from government circles in the Handelsblatt, the Federal Ministry of Transport is observing the ongoing proceedings by the EU Competition Commission against the freight transport division of Deutsche Bahn AG with concern.

Above all, however, the specialist officials and with them the managers of the railways are looking to France with concern. There, Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager has opened similar proceedings against the local freight railway, which is now having the first consequences.

At the beginning of the year, the Commission launched the investigation in France. The focus of the state aid proceedings is the loss-making rail freight company Fret SNCF.

For years, she had received billions in liquidity grants from the state parent company. When Fret SNCF was transformed into a trading company in early 2020, the rail freight company’s debts of 5.3 billion euros were canceled – which may violate European state aid rules.
