Berlin In the struggle to split the climate tax on heating costs, the federal government has agreed on a phased model. In the future, tenants should no longer have to bear the CO2 costs alone. Instead, landlords should also bear part of the costs, depending on the energetic condition of the building: the poorer the energy balance of the respective building, the higher the cost share for the landlords.

Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD), Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) and Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP) had agreed on a staged model on Saturday evening. Geywitz spoke on Sunday of a “fair division” of costs between landlords and tenants.

At the same time, it is ensured that the CO2 price can have a steering effect in the building sector. Landlords were given an incentive to invest in energy-related renovations. Tenants, on the other hand, remained motivated to reduce their own energy consumption.

The new regulation should come into force on January 1, 2023 if possible.
