Brussels, Berlin, Paris Robert Habeck and Bruno Le Maire are flying to Washington separately on Monday, but they want to appear as a team in the US capital for two days: the Economics Ministers of Germany and France are united in their goal of reducing the effects of the multi-billion dollar American subsidy program for green technologies (” Inflation Reduction Act”) on Europe. In French government circles there is talk of a “unique journey” that proves that the “interests of the EU” are supported by a “solid Franco-German relationship”.

The exchange between Berlin and Paris in the past few months has been anything but smooth. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and President Emmanuel Macron were strangers to each other, the lack of coordination on defense projects and the energy crisis gave a bad picture of the state of the Franco-German axis.
