Berlin, Montreal Robert Habeck steps out of the elevator. Last Monday, the sun shone in his face through the glass roof of the office building in Berlin-Charlottenburg. He beams at Marianna Mazzucato, who comes towards him. The Italian economist hands the minister her new book right away.
Mazzucato is Habeck’s most important economic adviser. It propagates a mission-oriented economic policy: the state should specify missions that the economy must follow. This coincides with Habeck’s understanding that the Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection also sees himself on a mission: saving the climate.
Habeck knows that this mission can only succeed with the acceptance of the citizens. But that’s exactly what he’s losing more and more. The public gets the impression that the Economics Minister is not doing climate protection for the people, but against them.
