Frankfurt Even their own target is ambitious: Lufthansa wants to hire 1,000 new employees per month. But the response on the labor market is so great that the target has already been clearly exceeded after three months. “We have already hired over 4,500 employees since the beginning of the year. So we’re ahead of schedule,” HR director Michael Niggemann told Handelsblatt.

Lufthansa reacted very quickly to the pandemic, which forced air traffic to ground worldwide. While Europe’s largest airline group employed 138,000 people at the end of 2019, it was only 105,000 at the end of 2021. Union representatives had criticized the fact that the entire industry had cut jobs too quickly.

When significantly more people wanted to travel again last year, staff shortages slowed down the ramp-up of flight operations. To date, the bottleneck has not been resolved.

“We urgently need better working conditions for employees in aviation, otherwise the next summer of chaos threatens,” warned Christine Behle, Vice Chairwoman of Verdi, recently.
