Berlin Federal Minister of Finance Christian Lindner (FDP) is exposed to calls for tax increases almost every day: Sometimes the Green Family Minister Lisa Paus proposes reducing the child allowance for high earners in order to finance basic child security, then the SPD-Leftists come up with the idea of a “one-off property levy”.
Tax policy is the big bone of contention within the traffic light. The frustration of the SPD and the Greens about Lindner runs deep. For the first time since the government was formed, they are feeling the levers of power he holds as finance minister. If Lindner says “No” to higher spending, the coalition partners can do little.
