Tesla registered NACS connector design

Tesla created its own standard by registering the charging connector it developed with the Model S in 2012. In a statement made today, the company recommended that the connector design, which it calls the North American Charging Standard (NACS), be used by other companies.

Tesla invites companies to use NACS connector design

Company officials underlined that the connector, which has been used for about 10 years, has proven itself after a total of 32 billion kilometers of charging cycles. It is worth noting that Tesla is the company that sells the most electric vehicles in the North American market.

The recently registered design can be used instead of connector designs such as the CCS Combo. Making a statement on the subject, the company said, “To fulfill our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy, we are opening our EV connector design to the world today. We invite charging network operators and vehicle manufacturers to place the Tesla charging connector and charging port, now called North America.” made statements.

Tesla’s charging standard was designed for AC charging (single phase) and DC fast charging using a “single slim package”. The company has officially announced that the DC power output can reach up to 1 MW, which is twice as much as the Combined Charging System (CCS) case.

It is known that the developed standard has two different configurations. The company’s statement on backward compatibility is as follows:

“The North American Charging Standard is available in both 500V nominal configuration and 1,000V nominal configuration. The 1,000V version is mechanically backward compatible (i.e. 500V inputs can mate with 1,000V connectors and 500V connectors can mate with 1,000V inputs).”

The maximum current value is not disclosed in the NACS connector design. According to the company’s statement, automakers will be able to offer charging with the desired current value within certain temperature limits.

Tesla states that the connector has no moving parts and is half the size and twice as strong as CCS connectors.
