Berlin A good two years after the start of construction, the environmental approval process for the electric car factory of the US company Tesla in Grünheide near Berlin has been completed. The Potsdam State Office for the Environment (LfU) gives the final approval for the new “Gigafactory”.

According to information from the Handelsblatt, Brandenburg’s Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) wants to comment on the details of the approval decision at a press conference in Potsdam on Friday.

The decision does not mean that Tesla can then start car production immediately. The State Ministry for the Environment recently said that the project developer had to meet other requirements and provide evidence before the plant could be put into operation.

Tesla has so far built its plant in Grünheide step by step through early approvals. According to the Federal Immission Control Act (paragraph 8a), an early start of measures is possible if there is nothing fundamentally opposed to the project being approvable and the investor implements it at his own risk.
