Berlin, Dusseldorf, New York, Tokyo Building self-driving vehicles is a matter of existence for Tesla. Developing a working autopilot, said CEO Elon Musk in June 2022, “decides whether Tesla is worth a lot of money or practically nothing”.
Not long ago, Tesla was worth more than BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mercedes, Toyota, and Volkswagen combined. In November 2021, the market capitalization of the world’s largest electric car manufacturer reached $1.2 trillion.
Today it is less than half. Never before has a company lost so much in market value in such a short time.
The company is facing numerous lawsuits over its driver assistance systems. The US transportation agency NHTSA is investigating. Now allegedly huge amounts of internal information have escaped from the company. They suggest that Tesla’s problems with autopilot could be even bigger than previously thought.
