According to vehicle registration data, Tesla Model Y and Model 3 were the two most registered vehicles in the USA between January and September. In addition, electric vehicle sales during the period reached 7.4 percent of the overall market this year, compared to only 5.2 percent in the first nine months of 2022.
The data also shows that if sales continue at this pace, 2023 could be the first year that electric vehicle sales in the U.S. exceed one million. We should point out that Tesla does not disclose sales data by country or model, so traffic registration data is used.

On a brand basis, Tesla was the leader with 489,454 electric vehicles registered in the USA during the period. This number represents a 41 percent increase year-on-year. Tesla was followed by Chevrolet (50,160) and Ford (46,547) in second and third place, respectively, while total EV registrations in the first 9 months reached 852,904, an annual increase of 61 percent.
CEO Elon Musk also responded to a post about registration rankings on Saturday, calling the sales number “not bad.” Automakers such as General Motors (GM) and Ford have slowed production plans, citing demand problems, while analysts warn that new models are being produced faster than consumers can buy them.
Tesla is preparing to launch the Cybertruck in the US at the end of this month. It is estimated that the company will rise at a faster pace in 2024 with Cybertruck sales.
