Frankfurt Once a tax return, always a tax return – that is a persistent myth. There are many taxpayers in Germany who do not have to have annual contact with the tax office because they are not required to make an assessment. As a result, you can decide every year whether you want to submit your documents.
Most of the time, the effort is worthwhile anyway: Normally, the tax authorities only set taxes on the basis of wages. But anyone who had expenses for health, retirement provision, craftsmen or donations can deduct these from their income – this reduces the tax burden.
That, in turn, is not that rare. Of the 14 million Germans who filed a tax return in 2017 according to the latest available data, 12.3 million received a tax refund – an average of 1051 euros.
