Tax inspection on 30 thousand social media influencers!

The Ministry of Treasury and Finance has recently launched an audit on individuals and sectors that earn high profits but pay low taxes. In line with the directives of the Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek, the Tax Inspection Board (VDK) took action. Nearly 30 thousand influencers earnings will be examined.

Social media influencers who do not pay taxes are being scrutinized

According to Hürriyet’s news, the Tax Inspection Board Presidency reached both the income and identity information of nearly 30 thousand influencers using data analysis methods. It was also stated that this number is the most comprehensive influencer database obtained to date.

It was known that social media platforms refrained from sharing this information for various reasons. It was stated that VDK detected new data about social media phenomena using some techniques such as web scraping.

During the audit process, people who lead a luxurious lifestyle but whose declared income does not match these expenses will be examined primarily. High-value car purchases, real estate acquisitions and luxury consumption habits on credit card statements will be discussed.

These expenditures will be analyzed based on data collected by the Ministry of Finance from relevant institutions. As a result of the analysis, it is aimed to identify the phenomenon names that engage in unregistered activities. It was also reported that in cases where the source of income is unexplained, the investigations may also be considered in terms of money laundering.

VDK will identify posts for advertising purposes, especially by examining references to certain brands and companies. In this way, it will be determined whether the income that should be subject to tax has been declared correctly.
