Statement from the IMF on the Economic Dimension of Earthquakes

Mahmud Mohieldin, Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), made a statement to Reuters about the economic dimension of the earthquakes affecting 10 provinces.

While aid comes from all over the world after the earthquakes that stifled our country, Turkey is also trying to heal its wounds.

The destruction after the earthquakes caused the death of thousands of lives. However, with the loss of life, there is also an economic dimension to the situation. Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)made statements about the possible effects of earthquakes on the Turkish economy.

The economic impact of the earthquakes is not expected to be as great as the 1999 earthquake

IMF Executive Director Mahmud Mohieldin said that the impact of the earthquake on Turkey’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is unlikely to be as significant as the 1999 earthquake.

According to the news reported by Rueters; Mohieldin added that after the initial impact over the next few months, public and private investment in rebuilding could boost GDP growth in the long run.
