Sony announced that Spider-Man 2 became the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game to date on the day it was released exclusively for PlayStation 5. This achievement is a huge achievement considering the PS5’s distribution base, which currently stands at just over 40 million.
Despite being exclusive to a single platform, Spider-Man 2 broke the fastest-selling record by selling 2.5 million copies.
Despite being a PS5 exclusive and foregoing a cross-gen release on the PS4, which has a larger user base, Spider-Man 2’s initial sales figures are a huge success. The game, which received praise by receiving 91 points on Metacritic, is positioned as one of the most positively evaluated games of 2023. Meanwhile, it sold 2.5 million copies in just the first 24 hours.
The post-launch update, which is expected to be released in December, will offer additional features, including the ‘New Game+’ mode, where you can keep your improvements and start the story again.
Comparatively, the original Spider-Man, released in 2018, sold 3.3 million units in its first three days. This figure narrowly beat God of War’s previous record of 3.1 million in the same time period.
God of War Ragnarök later reclaimed the title of fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game with 5.1 million sales in its first week. Spider-Man 2’s record is valid for the first 24 hours. However, at this rate, it looks like it will surpass Ragnarök.
Looking ahead, Sony has set an ambitious target of selling 25 million PS5s in the current financial year, a milestone that would mark a historic increase in new console sales.
