Berlin The SPD not only provides the next Federal Chancellor. She also has a large part of the money in the traffic lights. Even if the SPD, the Greens and the FDP do not separate so many percentage points in the election results – when it comes to the distribution of budget funds, it is worlds apart.

In any case, the SPD negotiated the coalition agreement extremely well with a view to money. Based on the budget planning for 2022, the seven SPD ministers and the Federal Chancellery alone have 72 percent of all budget funds. The FDP comes to 18 percent, the Greens are only allowed to distribute ten percent of all funds.

The two houses with the largest budgets are in the hands of the SPD. The Federal Ministry of Labor will have a budget of 162 billion euros in the coming year, the budget of Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) is 50 billion euros in the coming year. It is followed at some distance by the Ministry of Transport, which will soon be led by the FDP, with a budget of 35 billion euros.

The imbalance is also due to the fact that the budget of the Federal Ministry of Labor is so huge, because it also includes the tax pension subsidy of more than 100 billion euros. This money is fixed, so the old and new Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) will not be able to simply distribute it.

A few billion euros from the federal budget are also not yet taken into account in the bill. However, they do not fundamentally change the distribution of funds.

Several billion euros for the health department

In the 2022 budget, for example, 47 billion euros are planned for general expenditure, for example for fighting pandemics. These billions will still be allocated to the ministries. Here, for example, the SPD-led Ministry of Health is likely to receive billions of euros.

Also not included in the calculation are the net 29 billion euros that are in the “Energy and Climate Fund”. This is a special fund in the federal budget, in which funds to combat the climate crisis are parked. A number of funds from this should flow to the Ministry of Environment and Economics, i.e. into two green ministries.

Overall, however, the eco-party clearly occupies the departments with the smallest budgets. And also the houses that are not among the “investment ministries” mentioned. The Federal Ministry of Economics, which will be headed by Robert Habeck in the future, awards a lot of funding. Compared to other departments, however, on a small scale.

The large sums are moved to other houses. For example in the Ministry of Labor when the pension is stabilized. In the Ministry of Defense, when it comes to arms contracts, which often cost billions. In the Ministry of Transport, when it comes to large infrastructure projects, or in the Ministry of Education and Research.

In turn, the budget of the Ministry of Health has also grown significantly as a result of the pandemic. It should remain about for the time being, the consequences of the corona crisis will be felt for even longer. The houses are all run by the SPD or the FDP. The Greens, on the other hand, can only distribute some funds through the Family Ministry.

The eco party has secured important departments with the Ministry of Economics and Climate and the Foreign Office. The coalition partners, SPD and FDP, will distribute the big money. And with Finance Minister Christian Lindner, the FDP also has someone in its ranks who watches over spending.
