Share of nuclear energy falls below ten percent worldwide

Berlin The number of operational nuclear reactors worldwide fell further by four between mid-2021 and mid-2022 to 411 reactors in 33 countries. Nuclear power’s share of commercial electricity generation fell to 9.8 percent, its lowest level in 40 years, while wind and solar power’s share rose to over 10 percent, surpassing nuclear power for the first time.

These are key findings from the World Nuclear Industry Status Report (WNISR) 2022, which was published on Wednesday and presented in Germany at the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Berlin.

The WNISR was first published in 1992. An international group of experts assesses the status and trends of international nuclear energy. The coordinator and editor of the WNISR is the nuclear expert Mycle Schneider. He stated: “It is amazing how different the reality of the nuclear industry sector is from the perception of the public and numerous decision-makers as a thriving future technology.”
