Munich From the Chancellery to a billion-dollar investor: According to media reports, the former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz will work for the German-American technology investor Peter Thiel in the future.

The 35-year-old has confirmed that he will work as a “global strategist” for Thiel Capital from the first quarter, reported the “Kronenzeitung” and the news portal “Heute” on Thursday, citing Kurz.

Born in Frankfurt, Thiel was one of the founders of the online payment service PayPal and the first external investor in Facebook (now Meta). He is considered politically conservative and one of the supporters of former US President Donald Trump.

At the beginning of October, Kurz resigned as Austria’s Chancellor because of ongoing corruption allegations. He and some of his closest political colleagues are said to have used taxpayers’ money to commission polls to pave the way for the Chancellery. Kurz denies all allegations.

At the beginning of December he finally retired from all political offices. Before that, he and his girlfriend had become parents. The birth of his son changed his perspective, he said, and precluded a return to politics.

As early as the Christmas days, there was speculation that Kurz would be drawn to Silicon Valley as a manager. Kurz did not comment. On the short message service Twitter, however, he had his Christmas greetings – rather unusual – in English: “Merry #Christmas, relaxing holidays and a happy New Year to you all!”

Speculations that Kurz could get on with the US data analysis company Palantir Technologies had rejected them. Palantir is also one of the founding companies of Thiel.
